In April 1999, when the NATO bombed the Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Plant, the reactor section and the VCM storage tanks were destroyed, and the storage tanks for 1.2 EDC (1.2 dichloroethane) were hardly damaged, what caused approximately 2100 tons of EDC to be released.
In order to have the terrain remediated the system for ground waters pumping and purification (ground waters remediation) was installed. The system on the basis of the “extraction and treatment” technology was in operation from 2003 to 2019, and during that time approximately 1300 tons of EDC were extracted. The positive effect of the waste waters remediation system was reflected in lower EDC concentration in the ground waters and prevention of further pollution expansion, what the monitoring results confirmed.
