Within the economic development of Yugoslavia
the federal authorities recognized the need of constructing
a petrochemical complex in order to reduce the import of basic
chemical products and improve liquidity of the country.
Availability of raw materials, existence of experienced stuff,
and very favourable transportation possibilities for all sorts
of traffic, contributed to the decision that this industry
should be constructed within the existing chemical complex
(HIP) in Pančevo.
1971
– 1980
After selecting the newest process technologies,
mostly from the USA, six plants were constructed: LDPE, HDPE,
VCM, PVC, Ethylene and Chlor-Alkali Electrolysis, all being
technologically interconnected into the ethylene and chlorine
lines, and the Utility and Waste Water Treatment plants made
the system complete together with numerous specialized departments.
1988
All the loans taken for the complex construction were completely repaid.
1991
HIP-Petrohemija became richer for two more production plants. The Synthetic
Rubber Plant in Elemir near Zrenjanin was adjoined, and a new plant for production
of PE pipes and electrofusion fittings "Petroplast" was put into operation,
as well as two more plants for waste water processing.
1992
– 1996
The UN sanctions, lack of virgin naphtha, impossibility to import and export,
cancelled preferences, etc. completely blocked the plants operation in the period
1991-1995. The plants were shut down, conserved, regularly maintained and prepared
for re-start, what took place in September 1996.
1997
"Panonijaplast" from Crepaja, a plant producing PVC powder and HDPE
pellets, became a part of HIP-Petrohemija.
1999
April
Bombardment: During the action of the NATO against
FR Yugoslavia, two HIP-Petrohemija's plants were destroyed - Chlor-Alkali
Electrolysis and VCM plant, while the third one, PVC plant, was
disabled for further operation, by which one third of the total
designed capacities were permanently lost. Also the ecological
system was degraded in the wide area.
1999
September
All the plants which remained undamaged after the NATO bombardment restarted
their operation.
